Tamaki was born as the result of an affair between the Chairman of Ouran Koukou and a Frenchwoman whom his father had fallen in love with. His parents loved each other and would have gotten married but certain circumstances prevented it (aka, Tamaki's grandmother on his father's side).

He grew up in France with his mother until he started high school. His mother was a very sickly woman through most of Tamaki's life, so Tamaki spent most of his time staying with her trying to cheer her up and playing the piano for her - so he didn't have much of a childhood nor friends his age.

When he started high school his mother's family business was in trouble and Tamaki's grandmother offered to save them if Tamaki's mother would give Tamaki to his father to be the heir since his father had no other children. The catch was, however, that Tamaki was never to have contact with his mother again. Tamaki loved his mother so much that he did it for her sake.

Even though he moved to Japan and held up his end of the bargain, Tamaki still doesn't live in the main mansion with his father and grandmother because his grandmother, who doesn't like him and expects Tamaki to change himself first, refuses to let him live with them. So Tamaki lives alone with his dog, teacher and the servants in "Suou Family Mansion #2".
